PhD student (m/f/d) in Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, or Related disciplines for the Josef Ressel Centre for Materials Engineering in Soft Tissue Regeneration (JRC-MESTR)




The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology the Research Center in cooperation with AUVA is seeking a PhD student (all genders) for 30 hours per week starting on June 1, 2026. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, the Research Center in Cooperation with AUVA, has the goal of developing and advancing diagnostic, therapeutic and regenerative strategies to enable the full and sustained recovery of trauma patients. Currently, the institute employs around 80 people, consisting of biologists, chemists, biochemists, doctors, veterinarians, physicists, medical and electrical engineers. This multidisciplinary team makes it possible to cover an exciting range from basic to applied research.

What you bring to the role

  • Completed Master's degree in Biomedical engineering, Biotechnology, Regenerative medicine, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with preclinical animal models, preferably related to muscle or other soft tissues.
  • Basic knowledge of cell culture techniques, microscopy, proteomics/genomics is advantageous.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, and experience collaborating in interdisciplinary research environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, broad intellectual curiosity, and the interpersonal skills to contribute positively to a transdisciplinary project.
  • Key responsibilities: Establishment and execution of preclinical muscle defect models in animals, including implantation of 3D scaffolds and evaluation of scaffold performance and tissue responses.
  • Functional assessment of tissues, perform quantitative data analysis and interpret complex datasets combining structural, functional, and molecular information.
  • Prepare tissue samples for multi-omics analyses to investigate underlying molecular mechanisms.
  • Application and optimization of biophysical stimulation approaches, including shockwave therapy in animal models.
  • Investigate in vivo how extracellular vesicles (EVs) and biophysical cues synergistically influence tissue regeneration.
  • Plan, conduct, interpret, and report experiments, including preparation of presentations, scientific reports, and contributions to publications.

A gross monthly salary starting at EUR 3.753 (full-time/all-in). Depending on qualifications and experience, a higher salary is possible.
